Psychotherapy Modalities

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), as explained by its creator Dr. Francine Shapiro, is a structured psychotherapy approach designed to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories. Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR focuses on directly changing how memories are stored in the brain, reducing their emotional charge and allowing for rapid, lasting healing

DEEP BRAIN REORIENTING (DBR)

When trauma gets locked in deepest part of the brain.

The initial shock of trauma often gets stored in the deepest parts of the brain.

And when it isn’t fully processed, it can persists for years and even decades through chronic tension, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation.

Deep Brain Reorienting works to resolve unprocessed  intial shock, that first imprint of trauma.

STRUCTURAL DISSOCIATION THEORY

In response to abuse or neglect a child’s coping mechanism may involve a psychic withdrawal.  This is where splitting can take place, where emotional parts are develop apart from the core self. This trauma splitting involves a division within between the “normal self” and the “traumatized self.” This internal conflict leads to unpredictable mood swings, identity confusion, and a deep sense of emptiness. This is due to the split off parts working on their own and the core self feeling untethered. Structual Dissocation therapy is working to help integrate these parts with the core self. I work through this type of theory using what is called Fraser’s table. There are other similar appraoches like Internal Family Systems that work with the same objective.

PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY

Pscyhodynamic Therapy is what is known as traditional talk therapy, where childhood experiences are explored to help understand current day cognitive, emotional and behavioural patterns. This particular type of therapy has its benefits and its limitations. It can be very helpful and useful to understand why we feel, think and behave the way we do. In some cases this can help motivate one to work toward change by incorporating other modalities such as mindfulness and Cognitive behavioural therapy techniques. Using this combination is at times the approach I take and all that is needed, while other times moving into deeper work through other modalities is more effective.

CBT, REBT, EFT and more

In addition to some core modalities used, I incorporate elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and/or Rational Emotive Behavioural thearpy. When working with couples my approach is Emotional Focused Therapy which has been known to be very helpful in creating a deeper bond within a couple’s relationship.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy, or trauma informed therapist, incorporate the techniuqes and modalities that include but not limited to the ones listed above (EMDR, Structural Dissociation Theory, DBR) among other somatic and stabling techniques. These skills are suitable for those who have had trauma however they can be used for a variety of issues.  Trauma is subjective and is assessed based on the client’s experience, perspective and symptoms. When it is established that someone is struggling with unresolved issues that impact relationships. self-esteem, work related issues, motivation, cause additictive or compulsive behaviour,  it can be a result of trauma.
